Denise and John were in my Peace Corps cycle in Afghanistan. I remember her as a a sweet and gentle person and a boon to John. Her sudden death was shocked everyone. I remember seeing John in the Peace Corps office shortly after the accident and the emotional impact on him still haunts me today. From time to time I think about them both, how happy they were embarking on a life together. It reminds me to count my blessings.
( I took my wife’s last name years ago and prefer not to refer to my birth name here)
As a close friend of Denise, I am puzzled about 1974 being listed as the year she died. My memory is that she died in 1973. I got a call from her sister to tell me Denise had died and that John was flying home with her body. I attended Denise’s funeral in Greencastle, PA, where I met John.and listened to his account of her death. Denise was the loveliest person. I miss her to this day and wish I had kept in touch with John.
Denise I will see you in heaven, your loving husband is now with you! You will always be remembered! I was young when you died in Afghanistan, you made me realize, life is short and you have to always go for the gusto. I always get a bit sad around the anniversary date of your death. When I hear about Afghanistan in the news, I wonder if your cook who was given your corneas is still alive. Love your sister Kathy/Kate
